A World Orchestra You Can Build

A Musical Performance and Instrument Making Workshop for Families

A World Orchestra You Can Build

IRVINE – At this outdoor Arts Happening, explore the endless possibilities of making musical instruments from common household items at A World Orchestra You Can Build, a two-part musical extravaganza led by Dr. Craig Woodson on Saturday, May 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Great Park Palm Court Arts Complex.

Dr. Woodson will lead a fun-filled interactive event to help visitors discover different types of music and performance techniques using simple instruments from world cultures while sharing his expertise as an instrument maker and musician. Participants will then have the opportunity to make their own “drumpet”—a combination drum and trumpet – using recycled household items.

“We are so pleased the Segerstrom Center chose to bring Dr. Craig Woodson, an artist from their Arts Teach Program, to our Palm Court Arts Complex to engage the community, sharing his musical talents and showing them how to make instruments,” said Beth Krom, Chair, Orange County Great Park Corporation Board. “Bringing arts to people in an open and accessible way is an important part of our vision for the Great Park.”

Admission and parking are free.

Dr. Craig Woodson is a versatile artist and has performed professionally since 1991. He spent three years as a guest artist in Ghana, Africa, working to help with the mass-production of African musical instruments for schools. When he returned to the United States, he began to design simple instruments that young people could make and play. This lead to the creation of his performance, A World Orchestra You Can Build, and workshops where he teaches families to make one of 130 instruments using common materials and simple designs, like those created by children around the world.

A World Orchestra You Can Build is the sixth of nine Palm Court Arts Happenings presented at the Orange County Great Park in partnership with Arts Orange County, a leader in building appreciation and support for the arts and arts education throughout Orange County. The partnership with Arts Orange County will bring a variety of unique arts experiences to the Great Park throughout the year. This event is also presented with support from the Arts Teach Program from Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

The Orange County Great Park is located at Sand Canyon and Marine Way, and can easily be reached by the 5 or 405 freeways.
