Celebrate the “Great 948″

IRVINE – Fast becoming a place where creative energy comes together, the Great Park will host “Great 948,” a free community art project and arts happening at the new Great Park Palm Court Arts Complex September 24 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The “Great 948” event celebrates Orange County’s 948 square miles through creative expression, and the event will feature live bands, gourmet food trucks and a community arts project also called “Great 948.”

The “Great 948″ exhibition collection began earlier this month, with the Park reaching out to the entire Orange County community to collect 6×6 works of art on Masonite tiles provided by the Park. People from all walks of life and all skill levels have been working to create an artwork using any medium. An extensive public interest resulted in the tiles being distributed quickly, and completed tiles are due to the Visitors Center by Friday, September 23 at 8:00 p.m.

Also at Saturday’s event, he first Great Park Artist-in-Residence, Amy Caterina, will open her studio to visitors, and display a photography exhibition in progress. The “Great 948” Arts Happening will also showcase Plane Air Power, paintings and sculptures by Jorg Dubin in the Great Park Gallery.

The Orange County Great Park sits at at the heart of Orange County’s 948 square miles,” said Beth Krom, Chair, Orange County Great Park Corporation. “This program is a wonderful way for people to come together, express themselves through art and discover all the wonderful new arts and cultural programs the Great Park has to offer.”

Visitors to this free event can enjoy unique dishes from a variety of gourmet food trucks presented by social networking website Yelp while listening to live music by local bands Strange Birds, Yellow Red Sparks and the Allah-Las as well as Dust Collectors: DJs from the Crosby.

About the Great Park

The Orange County Great Park, with its 1,347-acre master plan, is the focal point of the redevelopment of the publicly-owned portion of the 4,700-acre former Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro. The Great Park features an iconic tethered helium balloon that rises 400 feet in the air, providing an aerial view of Park development. Other features include the Carousel, Farm and Food Lab, Kids Rock Playground, Palm Court Arts Complex, North Lawn recreation area, and historic Hangar 244.
