Auction Kicks Off Development of the Great Park
The Next Phase of the Development Process Begins With the End of the Auction
Three years of hard work by the Department of the Navy, the City of Irvine, the County of Orange and many hard working individuals and nonprofit organizations brought us to this point. During the next six months, a number of very important milestone events will bring the Great Park closer to reality.
- El Toro will be transferred from the federal government to Lennar Communities, the winning bidder in the El Toro auction.
- A development agreement between Lennar and the City of Irvine will give Lennar the right to build a limited number of houses and commercial buildings. The agreement requires the purchasers to transfer more than 1,369 acres to public ownership and contribute 400 million dollars towards the development of the Great Park.
- The Corporation will conduct a detailed park needs assessment.
- A professional park planning firm will take an inventory of all existing park facilities in Orange County in order to determine which types of new facilities are most needed.
- Residents will have the opportunity to communicate their ideas through public meetings, public opinion surveys and the Great Park website.
- The Orange County Great Park Corporation will be hard at work preparing for the transfer of this property and the initial phase of building the Great Park. Only 16% of the 4,700 acre El Toro base will be developed. 84% will be used for parks, education, sports, recreation and collateral activities.
- The Orange County Great Park will be the first major metropolitan park built in the 21ST century and, with your help, it will become the very best park in America.
