The Legacy Project

The Legacy Project is a collaborative effort of six photographers dedicated to producing comprehensive documentation of the former El Toro MCAS and its transformation into one of the nation’s largest metropolitan parks. This non-profit documentary project, which began in April 2002, will continue over the next decade and will employ photographs, video and oral histories to provide a unique historical record.

To date, the Legacy Project has created approximately 80,000 images in transparency, digital, and electronic formats. Many of the images are exterior and interior photographs of abandoned buildings on the base. Some images of the grounds were taken sequentially and other images were taken at fixed locations at timed intervals. In addition to photographic images and videos, the Legacy Project has also collected approximately 150 military posters left behind when the air base closed.

The Legacy Project has produced a number of special projects including the Perimeter Project, the Runway Project, the Timeline Project, and the historically unique, world record-setting Great Picture Project.
