Great Park Movie on the Lawn Series Returns May 31

IRVINE – Classic Fridays or Family Blockbuster Saturdays? The return of the Orange County Great Park’s annual Movie on the Lawn Series poses this question as this year’s incarnation of the popular and free outdoor movie series features themed movie screenings. Classic Fridays will take visitors through the eras with timeless movie screenings and Family Blockbuster Saturdays will showcase blockbusters and family favorites.

The Movie on the Lawn Series features nine feature film screenings beginning Friday, May 31 and continuing through June 29. Classic Movie Fridays will take place on the Back 40 behind Historic Hangar 244 near the Great Park Balloon. Family Blockbuster Saturdays will be located on the Terraced Lawn. The opening weekend screenings for the 2013 Movie on the Lawn Series feature:

Classic Movie Friday (May 31): Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

Considered by many to be the finest musical comedy of all-time, Singin’ in the Rain is sheer delight. Betty Comden and Adolph Green wrote this wonderful film about the time when movies were changing from silent to talkies. The songs range from the hilarious “Make ‘Em Laugh” performed by Donald O’Connor, to the delicate “You Were Meant for Me” and the show-stopping classic “Singin’ in the Rain” solo by Gene Kelly.

• Family Blockbuster Saturday (June 1): Thunderstruck (2012)

When Brian, a hopelessly uncoordinated young fan, magically switches talents with his hero (NBA star Kevin Durant, playing himself), he becomes the star of his high school basketball team…while Kevin Durant suddenly can’t make a shot to save his life. But with the playoffs approaching, Brian learns that being a true winner involves working hard at your own game, and he tries to make things right in time to prevent a catastrophic end to his hero’s season.

Admission and parking are free. Visitors are encouraged to bring low back beach chairs and blankets for this family-friendly outdoor movie experience under the stars. Movies will begin at approximately 8 p.m., pending sunset. Warm clothing is recommended.  Food and light refreshments will be available for purchase.  Events are weather permitting.
